Back in February, Alexa and her partner Jack, have just bought their first new home in Leeds, England. Let’s dive in with some more questions, and find out what the whole experience of buying a house at 20 was like.

Hello Alexa! At the very outset, I’d like to express my sincere congratulations on buying your first house!

What Does It Feel Like Being A Home-owner At 20 Years Old?

Hi, Thank you very much. It is indeed a pleasure to be doing this interview and sharing my unique experience with all the BossGirls reading this blog post.

From the initial idea about buying a house with my partner Jack to choosing the house and paying in the deposit, it all happened in a blink-of-an-eye.

I never imagined that I’d be buying a house at such a young age. The whole experience has been quite surreal, and to be honest, I still haven’t processed the idea that I’m an actual home-owner now.

From The Idea Of Buying A House To Getting The Keys, How Long Did The Whole Process Take?

We will be officially moving into our new home in July, which is good because it gives me more time to search for the perfect home decor items. But since we started looking at houses back in February, then the process of reserving it, and getting the mortgage and being accepted, the whole paperwork process took about one to two months.

Now we are basically just waiting to be handed the keys, hang the key pendants on and move in July.

Did You Have Any Particular Financial Strategy That Allowed You To Save Enough Money To Buy A House?

Regarding my savings, I owe a big part of that strategy to my parents, and I wanna thank them for it now. Ever since my younger ages, my parents have been putting my money away, putting them into savings accounts, and investing them in stocks and shares. Both of my parents are involved in the business world, and they’re both successfully running businesses on their own. My parents played an important role in my saving strategy, and I’m really grateful for it.

Also, after I turned 18 and became completely financially independent, I was saving as much as I could, whenever I could.

Jack’s saving strategy was putting aside money from his wage every month. And that’s how we were able to meet halfway, join our budgets and buy ourselves a house which we really love.

What’s It Like Buying A House With A Partner? Were There Any Fights In Choosing The Wall Paint Colour, Or The Size Of The TV?

Although for many couples out there buying a house can be quite chaotic, due to different tastes and preferences, I and Jack had no problem with that, and we went through the whole thing really smoothly.

We agreed on 99% of the things about the house, and that 1% were just minor disagreements in choosing interior colors. Jack is in love with grey color, so literally, everything he chose was grey. But in general, me and Jack’s tastes are very similar about most things in life, so there weren’t any conflicts in the whole process of buying and customizing the house.

What Was The Most Stressful Part Of The Whole House-Buying Process For You?

So far, the most stressful part of the whole process was actually convincing my partner Jack that there is more to life than a grey interior. His interior setting preferences were quite limited to grey color. Also, the whole situation with the global pandemic added some extra pressure to the buying process. Due to the current restrictions, our families couldn’t come to the house viewings with us. The house viewing wasn’t as free-willed as I thought it would be. We couldn’t just book a viewing and go. We had to meet up with hundreds of different mortgages and advisers, then they’d have to make sure that we can afford the house, which made the process quite stressful too.

I believe that the most stressful part is actually yet to come when we move into my family’s house for 6 months. At the moment, we’re living in Jack’s apartments in Leeds, but he’s selling it, and we will be moving back to Harrogate for 6 months. I imagine that will be quite a beautiful mess, and that I’ll wish we had chosen a house with an earlier moving date.

What Was The Easiest Part Of The Buying Process For You, Alexa?

So you see, the thing that I thought would be the easiest was picking the house. I expected that when I’d just walk into the first house, I’d fall in love with it and we’d be signing the papers right away. But that wasn’t the case. I could say that was the hardest part of the whole process actually because we were viewing house after house for a full week, and none of them was a match.

But when we finally found the one, I expected that the process of reserving the house was going to be difficult and stressful, which to my surprise went by quite smoothly. Our house was the last of its kind on the block, and I thought that we might need to be in a potential bidding war, or that we’d have to negotiate to get it, but as long as the bank was done checking our financial records, we were able to get the house.

Was It Difficult To Get Qualified For A Mortgage At The Age Of 20?

For me, it was a lot easier because I was doing the whole process with a partner. Jack isn’t a first-time buyer, he’s bought real estate before so he was familiar with the whole buying process. He has been a professional rugby player for about 4-5 years now, so his stable income made it much easier to qualify for the mortgage.

Being self-employed is very hard, especially during a pandemic crisis. And I also haven’t been working for that long. Therefore, I think it’s safe to say that if I’d have to do it all on my own, it would have been much harder, and maybe even impossible.

Do You Think That Having A Support System Is A Crucial Factor In Achieving Your Goals, And Do You Have One?

Absolutely. Having somebody to support you in the pursuit of your dreams is very important. For me that somebody has always been my father. My dad was the one who always stood by my side and supported all my ideas, dreams, and goals in my life, and he always believed in me.

Jack is also such a huge support in my life. I don’t think that I’d be doing what I’m doing without him. He just motivates me, and I’m really grateful to be sharing this whole experience with him.

Where Do You See Yourself 5 Years From Now, Alexa?

5 years sounds like a long time, but time flies, so I guess we would be there much sooner. I don’t know yet, but I’m really excited to see where I’m going to be 5 years from now. It’ll definitely be working on my dreams and achieving my goals in life. Maybe buying a bigger house, and having a family.

That is definitely my 5-year goal, a family.

Alexa, What Advice Would You Give To All The BossGirls and Young Hustlers Out There That Are Struggling To Achieve Their Goals In Life?

I always knew that I wanted to work for myself, and I knew that the only way I was gonna get that was to just go for it, even if I had to do it for free sometimes.

I always had a passion for Social Media, Influencing, and Promoting. I started influencing when I was 16 years old. At that time, nobody believed in me, or in what I aspired to achieve. But I didn’t let that get to me and stop me from achieving my goals.

And therefore, to all the BossGirls and young hustlers, If you have a passion for something in your lives if you have a dream, or any desire, Just Go For It. That’s the only way.

If I would have listened to anyone who laughed at me for what I was doing back then, I wouldn’t be buying a house right now.

So my advice to all of you would be: Whatever it is in life that you want to achieve, just go for it, because you’ll never regret investing in yourself.
