What college major should I choose? What career path should I follow? What if I enrolled for the wrong study course? Will I ever achieve all my goals? - The questions that seem to attack our minds every night when we turn the lights off, leaving us wide awake wandering between all the what-ifs, when's, and how's.

If you’re one of those people that just don’t know how to stop worrying about the future, in this blog post you’ll find a few practical tips designed to help you set your mind at ease.

When thinking about the future, some people have a clear map of the roads and the turns they need to take to reach their goals in life. Others are less certain about it.

The global pandemic of Covid-19 that we’re experiencing adds a whole new level of concern about what any of our futures may hold. As we spend our days in lock-downs, with nothing much to do than stare at screens, we’re being exposed to a seemingly perfect, artificial world.

Scrolling through the Instagram feeds full of Influencers, Models, and Coaches about each and everything, we can easily start to feel like we lack a future. This adds more pressure to our already troubled-minds, and we start to feel like complete failures. Nevertheless, a certain degree of worry can help us come up with action plans to improve the quality of our lives. But chronic and all-consuming worrying can be damaging and it can interfere with our ability to function freely in our daily lives.

And while we may never learn how to stop worrying about the future completely, there are some practical techniques to help us better manage that worry.
Below I’m going to share with you 3 Tips On How To Stop Worrying About The Future that you can easily incorporate into your busy schedule.

  1. Focus On The Now

Ok, but how? By practicing present-moment-awareness, a.k.a Mindfulness.
Mindfulness is a word we see and read all over nowadays, but little do we know about its actual powers.

The artificial world we’re presented with on Social Media can often make us question our role in life and experience an identity crisis. Traveling, Coaching, Bikini Pictures showing off perfect body figures, Million Dollar Lifestyles - no matter where you look, everyone on Social Media seems to be ‘having it’ way better than you. All this can lead you to question your abilities and talents and make you feel like you don’t know the real you anymore. In addition to imposing an identity crisis, Social media puts a distorted lens on appearances and the overall reality. All those manipulated posts on your Newsfeed can cause you to experience inadequacy about how you look, or what’s going on in your own life. And despite having 10K connections on your social accounts, you still end up feeling disconnected and alone.

Altogether, the media landscape impacts your self-esteem and triggers anxiety, and it can be a mental wrecking ball, demolishing your mental stability.

So how to stop worrying about the future when you’re constantly experiencing an identity crisis?

One way to do so is by practicing mindfulness. By practicing mindfulness, we’re training our minds to stay focused on the now and operate in the present moment.

Finding our purpose in life, and discovering what our true passions are, is best achieved by keeping a calm and steady mind. In addition to seeing more clearly, a calm mind also helps you think more realistically. Unrealistic thinking exploits our minds by creating a bunch of possible scenarios with a 1% chance of happening.
Furthermore, putting ourselves in the present moment helps us switch from being worried about the future to just being. When you’re fully committed to being in the present moment, you become more aware of your possibilities.
Therefore, calming your mind will help you reduce the pressure of your identity crisis and calm your emotions, allowing you to live in the present.

  1. Replace Your Worrisome Thoughts With Happy Thoughts

Another effective tip on how to stop worrying about the future is to break the cycle of irrational worrying by replacing your worrisome thoughts with happy ones.

Turning your worrisome thoughts around involves recognition of your negative thinking patterns. Start by paying attention to how often you’re worrying throughout the day. Then take a piece of paper, or a whole diary if you wish, and write down the things that start to worry you. Log every single worrisome thought that pops in your head. Examining your worries on paper, rather than just going through them in your head, will help you gain a more balanced perception.

Once you’ve squeezed out the last worrisome thought of your troubled mind, start replacing each worrisome thought with a more positive, and realistic one. The trick is to replace irrational thoughts, with rational ones.

Let me clarify by sharing a simple example. If you were asked, not to think of a pink dinosaur, a pink dinosaur will start running through your head. It’s just the way our brains work. But, if you’re instructed to focus on a rainbow unicorn, you’re more likely to think about that rainbow unicorn, instead of the pink dinosaur.

Although a silly example, try to implement this practice into your daily life. Instead of worrying about your future job or career path, tell yourself something among the lines of: “I know I’m capable of achieving my goals, and I will make it happen.”

We control the perspective that we have on all things in life. We choose whether to view things positively or negatively, and we’re fully in charge of how we respond to these perspectives.
By using this tip on how to stop worrying about the future, you’ll worry less about tomorrow, and start making more progress today.

  1. Set Up ‘Worrying Appointments’

When talking about how to stop worrying about the future, it can be hard to break this destructive habit right away. You can blast off Bob Marley’s Don’t Worry, Be Happy, but I don’t think that will be enough to chase away all your worrisome thoughts. I know, ‘cause I’ve tried it before. But one thing that you can do to help you deal with your troubled mind is Set a so-called, Worrying Appointment.
By setting up a ‘Worry Appointment’ you can start consciously limiting the time you devote to worry and doubt each day.

So how do these Worrying Appointments work? Well, rather than feeling anxious and worrying throughout the entire day, you schedule a specific time each day that you dedicate to the anxieties or problems that are preoccupying you. If a worrisome thought pops up out of your worrying time frame, rather than dwelling on it right there and then, make a note of it and get back to it during your Worrying Appointment. And once you arrive at your scheduled worry-time you can worry all you want!

Scheduling worry-time has been proven to be an effective method for minimizing stress and anxiety by several studies. Limiting your time to worry will make your worrying time more productive. Rather than dwelling on your problems for hours, you’re more likely to look for a solution when you know you’re running on a clear worry-time limit.

Worrying About The Future Is A Present-Moment Joy Killer

Bob Marley was right - ‘... in every life, we have some trouble, when we worry we make it double.’ The future, after all, is entirely unpredictable. Life has its’ almost magical way of turning things around, and sometimes when you least expect it, the best things happen. In all my sleepless nights, and all my overthinking I never saw this coming. I never thought that I’d end up in the entrepreneurship world, running this blog, or writing this post.

The greatest advice I can give you about how to stop worrying about the future is to focus on what’s in front of you right now and be grateful for it. Research suggests that when we cultivate an attitude of gratitude, we feel happier and more optimistic about our lives. By investing your time, energy, and heart in the now, you disconnect yourself from negative emotions and the overthinking that comes with worry.

So my dear BossGirls, stop dwelling about the past, and overthinking your future. Concentrate your mind on the present moment, and focus on your opportunities, not your setbacks. Keep on working towards your goals, and know that as long as you stay focused, optimistic and confident, your future will always be bright!

  1. Focus On The Now
  2. Replace Your Worrisome Thoughts With Happy Ones
